Papers relating to land in Northwestern District, ca. 1828-1956.

Papers cover various activities mainly conducted by Northwestern Land District Office. Documents include preemption declaration statements and affidavits, plats and surveys, military land warrants, Register's certificates, Receiver's receipts, lists of land remaining unsold at Galena when land office moved to Dixon, land patents, relinquishments, swamp land affidavits and correspondence with General Land Office, Auditor of Public Accounts, Surveyor General and private individuals. When Northwestern Office closed in September 1855 files were transferred to Springfield District Office, where officials placed material related to further sales of public land in Northwestern District. In 1879 Auditor of Public Accounts was given custody of all files maintained at Springfield Land District Office. He then proceeded to interfile his records, dating ca. 1829-1956, with those of appropriate district. In Northwestern District files Auditor's records include abstracts of land sold; corrections of errors in abstracts of land sold; lists of state land sales; abstracts of school land selected; lists of land sold for nnpayment of taxes; and correspondence with Northwestern and Springfield District Offices, Surveyor General and private individuals.
